In that case, could SamCo (in theory) get the defective goods replaced
free of charge?

They should now know that the crystal is a probable source of the problem.
It costs about #1.20 if I remember correctly and you can get them from
Farnell or Maplin. My parents got mine from the local electronics shop,
but the shop had to order it from Farnell. There is, infuriatingly, no
local electronics shop[*] anywhere near Oxford.
