Andrew, It was a little joke, a very little one in fact, one of my pet cat`s is named SAM, and she was 10 last year! I was waiting for someone to react to it, and you did, a little late mind you! but you were the first.
I don`t know exactly what the official release date was, I ordered my SAM in August 1989, it was delivered mid December 1989, along with a letter of congratulations on being one of the first to own a SAM. Most of the people who ordered thier SAM`s early had them delivered mid December (well the one`s I have spoken to, that is), I do not know anyone who got thier SAM in November, if anyone did, then let us know. I would have to dig to the back of the attic to find the original letter. Malcolm.
