Yes, and don't forget that the lower 16k of spectrum memory has
an access speed restriction, too....

Like you, my first experience in machine code was 6502 on a Commodore 16,
and I found the z80 to be quite weird at first.... lots of odd instructions
I thought I'd never need, no zero page, and bizarre 16-bit registers.
But I'm glad I did bother learning - the z80 is a lot easier to build
hardware for than the 6502, and you can pick up z80s for about a quid.

I don't think the speed restrictions are that serious - the excellent
games on Sam (eg Prince of Persia) are proof. And you could always turn
the screen off to get full speed.
