He could always replace that dodgy keyboard with its own keyboard, the same goes for diskdrive, atom etc. etc... And in answer to Edwin, we tested it a bit and as far as i can see everthing was still in place. we thought that maybe his scart-cable was the culprit, but checking his Sam on my monitor and cable gave the same results. And furthermore even without the Atom it would not boot or start (with spacebar pressed off course). ASIC maybe?
