Cutting the ribbons wont really work as they are insulated except for the bit that plugs into the connector. The breaks are most likely to happen at the fold where the ribbon meets the main membrane area... and conductive paint / pen is the only way to fix them easily. (Although I had one membrane in which there was a fault at the connector end - cleaning it with a PCB copper / edge connector cleaner and applying some conductive paint did the trick, but the as i said, the breaks are more likely at the fold) > or someone here once mentioned that you can buy new membranes somewhere!
