I've had one working for quite a long time now
(see www.ee.surrey.ac.uk/Personal/A.Gale/sam/ ) but sadly
the central chip isn't easy to obtain anymore. Also, there
wasn't really much interest in it, possibly because it required
soldering inside the SAM.

If there is sufficient interest then I may pick it up again in
the new year. I was thinking about a design that used more easily
available chips, and the biggest design decision is "how many
keys can be pressed simultaneously" ? The simplest design I'm
thinking of would allow any or all of the cursor keys, ctrl, shift,
and symbol shift to be pressed simultaneously, plus any one other
key. This would use approximately 13 chips for an internal
version, and 20 for an external version. To add another key (any)
would require another 6 chips per key.... the PCB would be getting
quite hairy with > 1 'any' key, though.
