If you are using samba.org-built binaries, you should uninstall all your samba RPMs, then install the samba.org binary. Alternatively, you distributor might provide their own binaries of samba. It seems like you are trying to start the samba service using the pam (pluggable authenitcation modules) configuration file, which will not work. | auth: command not found | auth: command not found | account: command not found | session: command not found | password: command not found | This looks very much like configuration lines from a pam configuration file. | I found the samba script in /etc/pam.d, not in /etc/samba where I'd expect | it. Also, it sure seems strange that everything in the pam.d directory is: | -rw-r--r-- (what's up with that?). | Those permissions are correct for pam. Start-up scripts in /etc/rc.d/init.d would need to be executeable (I am assuming that is what you meant by chmod'ing samba - you didn't specify how you chmod'ed it). | Obviously, I chmod'ed samba and that's when I had the problems I listed | above. | You should be starting samba by doing: # /etc/rc.d/init.d/smb start or # service smb start Buchan - -- |----------------Registered Linux User #182071-----------------| Buchan Milne Mechanical Engineer, Network Manager Cellphone * Work +27 82 472 2231 * +27 21 8828820x202 Stellenbosch Automotive Engineering http://www.cae.co.za GPG Key http://ranger.dnsalias.com/gpg.key -----BEGIN PGP SIGNATURE----- Version: GnuPG v1.0.6 (GNU/Linux) Comment: Using GnuPG with Mozilla - http://enigmail.mozdev.org iD8DBQE8srfyrJK6UGDSBKcRAl9OAKCuG8xqkH0BY+LZrErg8XaJIB9YYgCeI5t/ LOE6N8aH+X6/nr9Qefc0QxE= =52bR -----END PGP SIGNATURE-----
