from smb.conf man page
%L the NetBIOS name of the server. This allows you to change your
config based on what the client calls you. Your server can have
a “dual personality”.

I was under the impression that %L applies to domain controller
environment, which we're not in. Our 'security' is set to share, so
none of the domain controller options would do us any good. Correct?
