The problem I ran into was the the inetOrgPerson objectClass required a sn attribute but the samba schema would not allow it. I added it as a allowed attribute and added the objectClass then and all is well.

Work's fine here. Just use the inetOrgPerson-Attributes. On the OpenLDAP-FAQ-Site you can find some informations about this.
