In the past these problems have often been caused by bad
hardware. It might be that we trigger some condition on your
box by beating that locking.tdb pretty hard. One way to
slightly shift our load pattern would be to set

use mmap = no

in the [global] section of your smb.conf. This does not
really solve the root problem (which I don't know from the
description), but it might help you work around the issue.
