[Samba] nss_wins

Is there a way to use nss_wins to get the hosts of the windows domain without joining the domain? I do have a login into the network but the company I am with is a bit sticky about allowing a linux machine to join the network.

If it is possible, is there some kind of how to to do it and what I need to configure to make it work? Does it require winbindd to run? I am currently running under Mandrake 8.2 with samba 2.2.3.
