I take it back, the first part of your problem was a red herring. All you were missing was the DOMAIN+ piece in front of the user-name/group. chown is smart enough to deal with the dot in the username properly, IF there is such a user. If not, it uses the dot as a user/group seperator. I guess your no such group palmer error was because that was the last thing it tried before giving up...
