I am using version 3.5.6 so I could use that but obviously don't want to negate 
it with an upgrade.

I'm thinking I must crazy to ask for "force directory security mode" parameter 
to come back?

If you're using 3.6.x or below, check out the "force security mode"
and "force directory security mode" parameters. As I said, these have been 
removed in 4.0.0.
