Did you install libcrack2-dev with apt/aptitude or such kind of tool?
Packages that libcrack2-dev depends on are also needed.
In my environment, wamerican, libcrack2 and cracklib-runtime are also
installed with libcrack2-dev.
The install was done through apt. All the libraries you mention are
installed, and still the same error.
I am running the 64 bit version of Ubuntu 12.04. Can that interfere with
the process?
Indeed I tested on the 64 bit version of Squeeze and could compile/link.
It should be compiled on Ubuntu..., but I do not know why you cannot, sorry.

I finally got it working... I compiled it on Debian squeeze 64 bit and
copied the resulting code to Ubuntu 12.04 64 bit. Probably not the
proper way of doing things, but it works.
