What I do see in the samba log which might be the cause is:

[2003/01/16 14:00:23, 0 ] passdb/pdb_ldap.c:pdb_getsampwnam(858)
LDAP search "(&(uid=ws01_)(objectclass=sambaAccount))"

... should this not be (&(uid=ws01$)(....
