in older versions of windows (w98) we solved this problem when we installed Win9X Cache Handling.reg, shipped with samba.
Well, F5 works for files, but does not update the left pane in the explorer. Hm, what reg entries?
in newer installations (we using w2k sp3 at time) i did not have the problem.
