By the way - my version of Slackware is 8.1

My log.nmbd is in /var/log/samba. That's on slackware 8.1 with the samba-2.2.7-i386-1 package.

Did you try 'find / -name log.nmbd' (as root) to find it? Or was it just not in any of the places you looked?
