When opening a word 97 file on a network drive it creates a ~$.... file, but on exit the temporary doesn't disappear. If i access the file by network neighbouhood the problem doesn't occur anymore...Strange no? I tried with all win 2000 services packs, and i use samba 2.2.7 on redhat 8.0.
