A great program for Win9x machines if you still have them (like we do :)) is justpop. Do a Google search for JUSTPOP.EXE -- it's a free-standing program, and mimicks the behavior of the NT/2K messenger service... no facility to write back, just a clean box with an [OK] button and the message and the user it came from. I use it with LPRng to be notified at the help desk of printer errors.
