I've gotta send a thinks out to Bob Crandell for this. For while he doesn't know it, his smb.conf helped me fix my problem. His conf file had one extra line in the [global] section concerning printers that mine did not.
I added "disable spoolss = yes" to my conf file and all is well - or at least I get a "Ready" indication when looking at my printers now. Thanks again to all who responded. -- Kevin L.
