Here's a rough list of what backend to use when:

tdb - Small (fresh) installation, only one DC
ldap - Larger (fresh) installation
smbpasswd - for backwards compatibility only
mysql - for those who have a current system with MySQL and want to
                integrate that
xml - for backup purposes
