I know this sounds like a typical name resolution problem, but
that is something it certainly isn't. here are the facts:
the principles:
server: samba 2.2.8a on netbsd 1.6.1
client: XP Pro Japanese
what works:
1. netbios resolves
2. net use \\<ip address> and start->run:\\<ip addr> always works fine
3. net use \\<netbios name> /user:<account> works fine and all
subsequent connects using the <netbios name> are golden.
what doesn't work:
1. start->run: \\<netbios name>
what is in the logs:

Closing connections
It looks to me like the client isn't sending a username. I
really don't have any idea what I should be looking for here.
thanks,
