Have you tried without "--with-gnu-ld"? I would expect you are using /usr/ccs/bin/ld
which is the Sun version of ld. I've compiled on Solaris 9 without any problems on
several systems and releases of Samba 3.x

        thanks Andy.

Hi,
I am compiling Samba-3.0.1 on a Solaris 9 machine.
I have gcc-3.3.2. Running "make" fails. Thanks for
your advice.

PATH=/usr/bin:/usr/local/bin:/usr/ccs/bin

# ./configure --with-included-popt --with-gnu-ld

# make
 ....
Linking bin/smbd
/usr/ccs/bin/ld: illegal option -- E
usage: ld [-6:abc:d:e:f:h:il:mo:p:rstu:z:B:CD:F:GI:L:M:N:P:Q:R:S:VY:?] file(s)
 ...
collect2: ld returned 1 exit status
make: *** [bin/smbd] Error 1.

Shane
