[Samba] Question

I see 2 different versions of SMB available for download from samba.org. My question is this. Which version should I use?

We would like to setup a PDC in our shop. We use NIS for authentication. Can we even authenticate thru a PDC with NIS? Is my only option smb_ldap and pam?

We are needing a PDC to solve some update issues we are having making it easier for our shop to push out updates and changes to the desktop.
