It does seem odd that there is no ./configure for smbldap.
It could be used to parse ldap.conf/smb.conf and reduce the number of
config files in the short term.

... and what about something like this:

Startup:
Check for ldap changes in ldap.conf/smb.conf
        Rebuild the smbldap_conf.pm
        ELSE
        continue as normal

Shutdown:
Perhaps save ldap state data, if necessary, for startup comparison?
