Greetings,

About 2 months ago, we decided to backup our Oracle test servers via samba rather than nfs -- the backups were just taking too long using nfs.

Using UDP NFS per chance?

smb_get_length: recv error = 5

EIO possibly.

Has anyone seen and successfully corrected these errors?

In lieu of a more specific answer regarding above error, have you checked your network is alright? NFS over UDP particularly gets hit very hard performance wise when used over flaky networks. NFS over UDP over non-flaky networks should be quite fast performance wise otherwise (possibly faster than SMB). I regularly get over 30MBit/s with NFS over TCP over 100BaseT to a very low-spec NFS server (UDP should be faster too..).

Check your network for errors on interfaces and ports, eg mismatched forced duplex/rate settings, bad cables, etc.
