Thanks to Jim C. for his suggestion of winbind, which I will also pursue. However, this specific problem was corrected by moving the "private" directory from NFS to a local filesystem.
I recall experiencing this situation before. Okay, Solaris gurus, what exactly causes this problem? Is it unique to Solaris? Is it something to be avoided by software (Samba) developers?
