From the Windows Resource Kit download IFMEMBER.EXE and issue IFMEMBER /LIST which is a handy way to get a list of group memberships for the account logged in.
As for you saying it makes no difference if you are admin or not (specifically local admin BROKE access here) how are you setting that in your environment?
It does seem you do get further than I could, simply changing to the drive letter or DIR returned Access Denied here. So exactly where do you run into Access Denied? What about
ECHO hi > test.txt
at a command prompt for a network drive?
TYPE test.txt
???
