No it didn't help I also tried net use //ipaddr/share /user:xxxx
checking the samba log file yields the message:
[2004/08/25 11:32:28, 0] passdb/pampass.c:smb_pam_passcheck(827)
  smb_pam_passcheck: PAM: smb_pam_auth failed - Rejecting User xxxx !
