heartbeat/drbd under Linux so I need the UIDs of files to match on both. I'm uncertain if "idmap backend" will work if winbind is getting the account from a Windows AD Domain Controller rather than a Samba PDC, and setting up LDAP seems like a lot of trouble.
That's exactly what it's used for. You could always store the idmap in the ldap store on your windows server if you want to avoid another server/service in your network. It's been done before and the conversations about it were on this list.
