I have but not enough time has passed to make the determination if it
solves the problem or not. I'm collecting information just in case. I
still would like to know what is considered a solid setup for a samba
server. kernel version, file system type, anything which would be
considered, or get us closer to the 'perfect' setup.

The system has a 2.4.21 kernel with xfs filesystems. It is a redhat 9
machine on IBM hardware with a large FC attached array connected via a
qla2300.
Did you test that the sendfile implementation is really the cause for
the failure. That means did you try
use sendfile = no
in global?
