I just read your posting on Samba regarding excel sheets opening as Read Only. I had a similar problem on my network, and found the share permissions at the root of the network drive the files were on was too limited. After changing the SHARE permissions from Read Only to Read and Change, then trying to open the excel files again, they opened properly.
