There is a smbpasswd file in /usr/local/samba/samba-2.2.3a/source/bin. However, I don't know that it is being used. I have never "set up" any new user and it had worked perfectly for a couple of years.
Also, I don't know how to look at the smbpasswd file. If I cat the file it is encrypted.
