Sorry, I never saw that thread in my many hours of searching (posting a question is a last resort for me). Sometimes your search terms have to be "just right" to find the answer you're looking for. Anyway, that thread you mentioned solved my problem. I upgraded the shadow-utils package from 4.0.3-40 to 4.0.3-42.
