Hey Gordon,
If you install lots of open source software (e.g. compile much from source), I recommend you leave the Sun ld named ld.sun. This way, you will not run into any Solaris-ld issues with other S/W. GNU is the way!

Use GNU ld is my suggestion. I don't link the SUn linker. I just rename /usr/ccs/bin/ld to something else
