I upgraded to version Version 3.0.7-1.2sme01.
It seems to still not work, but noting what you say about leaving it as default, I see that I have a line :
" unix charset = ISO8859-1 "
Should I just remove that line?
Also, I seemed to lose my printers (as when viewed from XP clients - works ok from 'lp'). Any ideas why that would be, and how to get them back again?
Max.

you should be using samba 3 and you should leave unix charset at default (utf8). Then you can create filenames whatever you want. You might need to convert existing filenames if you have those from your old unix charset to utf8 for example with convmv.
