Short of a good answer, here's a guess: Logging with disk buffering. Set your loglevel to 0 and see if it stops.
doesn't it also look into smb.conf periodically for changes? I'm not sure if it can be disabled, though (putting this file in ramdisk would be a solution if there is no other way to stop Samba from looking into that file).
