I upped the log level to 5 and restarted Samba. From Starbase I did a simple:

C:\> net use w: \\earth\web
Enter the user name for 'earth': System error 1223 has occurred.

The operation was canceled by the user.

The password is invalid for \\earth\web.

Mystery solved! Well sorta. Per chance I did a:

C:\>net use w: \\earth\web <my old password> /user:"Andrew DeFaria"

At first I used <my current password> but that said that the username/password was incorrect. For grins I tried my old password and it worked! Now my real Windows password is say "foo" and my old Windows password was "bar". For some reason, Samba had my old password (for Starbase only).

The following fixed this for my username and ultimately my daughter's username. As root on Earth I did:

$ smbpasswd -U andrew
Enter new password: <my new password>
Reenter new password: <my new password>
Password for andrew changed.
Password for andrew changed.

Notice the, not one, but two lines of "Password for andrew changed". So now my passwords are in sync and everything works just fine.

Strange, but I'm happy.
