Heya,
after looking through the man page of smb.conf, I've found another interesting directive:
max smbd processes
This one has its value set to 0 by default, try setting it to a value reasonable for your count of clients. I assume it has to be used in combination with deadtime, otherwise old processes might not exit and so new ones cannot spawn...
