This is most probably due to additional permissions checks Microsoft introduced in some patch leading to SP4, see http://support.microsoft.com/kb/327462/ . One way to cure this is to set a registry key on the clients, see http://www.samba-tng.org/docs/tng/windows-registry-patches/WinXP_RoamingProfiles.reg (This also works on W2k.)
