What permissions do you have on /home/shared ? Are your machines on the same subnet ?
My public drive ;
[public] path = /public public = yes only guest = yes writable = yes printable = no
Permissions on /public are 777

Thank you for your reply.
The machines are on the same subnet, however Shorewall settings prevented connections from Ubuntu box to Windows. It works now.
