I think the problem is under control now. I misunderstood the section of Samba-Guide that talked about WHERE to look at the efective file and directory permissions. I mean, in XP, to reach the dialog where you have the "Permissions", "Auditing" and "Ownership" tabs, you have to click on the Advanced button in the Security tab. I was trying to set permissions directly from the Security tab of the directory properties and apparently, that doesn't work. In the Advanced dialog, you have a far more detailed permission definitions. Those are the ones that finally apply to the objects.
