Hi folks, I think we've found the solution to the mystery I described earlier. The messages are caused by Microsoft Anti-Spyware, the beta version of which is installed on the computer. We tracked it down when Anti-Spyware was installed on another computer, and we started seeing similar messages from it.
It's still not clear exactly what's going on. On the first machine, Anti-Spyware causes a string of failed attempts to map shares where the share name has erroneously had a ".dll" appended to it. In the case of the second machine, Anti-Spyware causes a much longer list of failed attempts, in which each share name is tried with each of a long list of extensions (including .bat, .exe, .pif, .scr,....). The machines have shortcuts on their desktops leading to the correct shares, and these seem to be what triggers this behavior from Anti-Spyware. Since Anti-Spyware is still in beta, we're considering filing a bug report with Microsoft.
