Hi Patrick, I've had similar problems to yours as far as speed is concerned, and while I haven't been able to completely resolve the issue, I have gotten better performance than I had before. Unfortunately, tweaking Samba to your speed needs is a bit of a black art, I can however point you to some info to help.
The first FM to look at is this one: http://www.dd.iij4u.or.jp/~okuyamak/Documents/tuning.english.html The second thing to try is to ensure that under socket options in smb.conf you have the following: socket options = SO_RCVBUF=8760 SO_SNDBUF=8760 TCP_NODELAY IPTOS_LOWDELAY The SO_RCVBUF and the SO_SNDBUF will have to be tweaked depending on your network.
