Is /etc/ldap.conf setup correctly?
Some apps search for /etc/openldap/ldap.conf or
/usr/local/etc/openldap/ldap.conf (you can make copies or symlinks). You
can also try to assign hostaddress, searchbase etc. with ldapsearch's
command line parameters directly.
