Just to update I've read a couple of things which suggest that net usersidlist only works through winbindd and since I'm not using it that could be my problem on that.

With the group member lookup I have installed the latest stable openldap libraries 2.3.11, recompiled samba and resetup the groupmappings but it still fails.

Now when I do a net rpc group MEMBERS command I get
