I would say in most cases maybe. But like Jerry suggests I'd compile the SRPM and fix any dependency issues by hand as they surface. You could also take the SRPM for your distribution, like I did for FC1, and modify to work with the sources from samba.org ... Most of the patches work with little modification from the original if my memory is correct. The latest 2.0.21b version removes the Fedora directory under packaging; but, I fixed by re-creating the directory and stuffing the files to be copied in there. Your mileage will vary.
