we have the same problem with the directory structure where I work. If you ever find a solution, please let me know. I know that if you set a sticky bit and the permissions are right, it doesn't allow the directory to be deleted. We had trouble using it with group permissions though.

That made a difference - if that option is set then I can delete the
file.

What is strange though is that a directory with the same permissions
can always be deleted.
