I am running Red Hat Enterprise Linux AS release 4, with Samba having
been installed with the OS installation. Samba is running and works as
expected.

I downloaded the source code for a newer version, and walked through the
configure, make, and make install processes. After doing so I cannot
get the new version to run.

Leaving everything as it is the old version runs at reboot. If I stop
the exiting version (service smb stop) and attempt to run smbd from the
location of the new installation (/usr/local/samba/sbin/smbd -D) nothing
happens (smbd is not listed when I ps ax | grep mbd). I added
/usr/local/samba/bin to my path. The original versions of smbd and nmbd
are in /usr/sbin (I believe).

What do I need to do to use the newer version? Did I do something wrong
with the configure, make, and make install processes (I followed along
with the Using Samba book)?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.
