Bad network? TCP does not checksum the payload, so it might be possible that the data arrives corrupted. A way to at least detect this would be to enforce smb signing. 'server signing = mandatory' would be that option. You might then see spurious network disconnects which also might corrupt the DB, but smbd should be much more verbose for this particular error.
